WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GAMBLING ADDICTION

Gambling is a bigger business than ever before. Gaming is no longer limited to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and excluding Utah and Hawaii, every state in the country allows some form of legal gambling. Consequently, the need for gambling addiction treatment has increased dramatically.

WHAT IS GAMBLING ADDICTION?

Until the 80s, the Amercian Psychiatric Association (APA) considered gambling addiction to be an impulse-control disorder and listed it as such in their Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). However, subsequent research has shown problem gambling to be more closely correlated to drug addiction than previously thought. Both activities involve the brain’s reward system and a release of dopamine. Furthermore, just like an opiate addict needing greater amounts of their drug of choice, those suffering from gambling addiction also build a tolerance, requiring bigger and riskier bets to produce their desired “high.” As a result, in 2013 the APA reclassified pathological gambling as an addiction in the latest edition of the DSM.

FURTHER FACTS ABOUT GAMBLING ADDICTION

Surveys show that 4 out of 5 people in the United States have some type of gambling experience. It is estimated that around 2 million Americans suffer from gambling addiction and up to 20 million engage in “problem gambling,” or gambling that disrupts their lives in some way.

Here are some signs that you have a gambling problem:

Hiding your gambling from friends and family

Breaking promises you’ve made to yourself or others about your gambling

Playing with money you can’t afford to lose

Family or friends have expressed concerns about your gambling

Justification or minimization of your gambling habits

Using gambling as a means to avoid life problems

Needing more money or riskier bets to continue to enjoy gambling
